Workshop – Create your own Altar

In collaboration with the ‘I am Ancient Modern’ pop up exhibition at Casa de la Noche this special workshop will be presented to create your own unique altar with artist Sara Thorn.

Create your own Altar– Honouring the ancestors, ancient inspirations and connections to the divine.

The Workshop will be in English and Spanish

Cost Per Person  $60 USD per person,

Bring a friend  $110 USD ($55 per person)

No prior experience required, there will be guidance and assistance in-

• concept development
• moulding with dry clay
• painting effects
• mixing colours
• themes
• any technical issues and ideas development.

The tradition of altars is ancient and spans across time and many cultures. In the lead up to  the Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico, the rich history of handmade altars  will provide some inspiration for this workshop.

Attendees will be invited to create a personal, family, historically inspired, a altar to a beloved pet, an admired celebrity , shamanistic altar, fantasy altar or whatever your heart desires.

The workshop includes specially commissioned hand made wooden  table top altars to paint and decorate straight from the carpenters workshop.

We will be working with paint, collage, dry modelling clay to mould figures and create some 3D effects on your altar if you choose. There will also be a selection of  images, milagros, glitter, and other treasures to decorate your  altar using glue.

Parent and child are welcome (child over 8 years old), this is a beautiful family activity

Participants are encouraged to bring photos and mementos of family, loved ones, inspirations  bits & bobs, treasures, figures to personalise your altar and any offerings you feel you would like to include in your altar.

This 3 hour workshop will give you enough time to really create a altar you will treasure for years to come.

About your facilitator

Originally from Australia, Sara Thorn now calls Saint Miguel home.

She has 20+ year career as an artist and designer, working with artisans across India, Vietnam, Borneo and designing textiles in Paris for Christian Lacroix. She is currently working with by a traditional Talavera family locally.

Sara runs a limited-edition homewares and fashion label called Sara Thorn and has exhibited her visual art globally.

Sara has been teaching and holding workshops for over 15 years in universities, art schools, museums and privately in Australia and globally. Offering classes & workshops across design, creativity, yoga and meditation and signature creativity.
